YES’N’YOU – Our Teachers’ Hobbies and Interests (A2 Unit 1 Module 1 compatible)

Hello everyone,

This blog is special. It is about our teachers’ hobbies and interests. What do you like doing at the weekend? Do you prefer watching movies or cooking in the evening? What games do you enjoy playing?

Here are some typical hobbies:

I asked some of our teachers what they like doing in their free time.

Gabriel has a lot of hobbies and interests! Here is what he said:

I prefer watching movies at home at the weekend.

I prefer eating sushi on special occasions.

I enjoy roller skating by the beach.

I enjoy cycling when I am on holiday.

I like reading novels but I don’t like reading comics.

I like meeting friends at the bar on Friday evenings.

Sheree has some seasonal preferences…or not:

I really prefer living in the country side to living in a city. Here I can enjoy walking and playing with my dogs.

The thing I like doing the most is cooking. On Sunday I make cakes. My mother-in-law likes eating all the things I make but I prefer making Christmas cakes. Only once a year? Not in my house!

Rose likes making lists:

I enjoy reading, watching films, going to concerts and listening to music.

Carolyn says that this is all true:

I prefer living in a quiet town to living in a crowded city.

I enjoy singing; that’s why I joined a choir!

I like eating hot and spicy food!

And finally, David likes relaxing on a Saturday:

One of my weekend hobbies is cooking lunch. I enjoy planning what to cook the day before, then I buy the ingredients on Saturday morning. I prefer cooking a big meal on a Saturday rather than on a Sunday and I like doing it while I am listening to some music. Sometimes one of the family offers to help but I prefer cooking alone as it represents a couple of hours for me, although obviously the whole family benefit from the results (or not!).

STOP! GRAMMAR TIME! A2 Unit 1 Module 1

We can talk about hobbies and weekend activities using this verb pattern:

LIKE + ING

PREFER + ING

ENJOY + ING

Look for examples of these structures in the texts above. Try to use the structures in your next conversation in English. You can ask questions like this:

WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING (AT THE WEEKEND)?

WHICH DO YOU PREFER EATING, CHEESE OR CHOCOLATE?

DO YOU ENJOY GETTING CAUGHT IN THE RAIN?

You can form the negative like this:

I DON’T LIKE LISTENING TO HEAVY METAL IN THE BATH.

SHE DOESN’T PREFER BEING WITH YOU, SHE PREFERS BEING WITH ME!

THEY DON’T ENJOY MAKING PAPER PLANES.

Some other verbs that follow this verb pattern are:

Love, hate, dislike, regret, and suggest.

If you are not in the mood to do something, you can say:

I DON’T FEEL LIKE + ING

For example:

Take care until next time,

all the best,

Al

I like enjoy with my children. We play paddle in the gym close to home.
On the other hand, I like reading science fiction novels.
    And also like going swimming
At the weekend I prefer cooking vegetables such as green beans or zucchini,
but I also like to eat some cake
